Every emotion has a story to tell.
Stress, anxiety and depression affect us physically, emotionally and mentally, and often
overlap and feed into one another.
Stress
Stress is your body’s response to internal and external triggers. It can positively act as a
motivator to achieve things, but when stress becomes chronic, i.e. when you feel stressed for an extended period, it can negatively affect you in many ways. Chronic stress can make it more likely for you to develop other mental health disorders, such as anxiety or depression, and can affect your heart and digestive health.
Anxiety
Anxiety is our brain’s way of reacting to stress and alert us of danger. Everyone feels
anxious from time to time. It is a normal nervous response. Anxiety disorders on the
other hand mean that anxiety, fear and worry are constant and overwhelming. Common
symptoms include unease, sweat, increased heartrate, heart palpitation, trembling,
gastrointestinal issues, dizziness, inability to concentrate, rumination, insomnia and
excessive fatigue, and obsessive avoidance or triggers.
Depression
Everybody feels unhappy now and then. Most times this lasts a few days and goes away
on its own. Depression is different. It can feel like prolonged sadness that gets in the
way of daily functioning, and that makes it harder to do and enjoy the things we love. It is a mood disorder, and symptoms include feeling sad, empty, anxious, helpless, unworthy, guilty, irritable, having trouble to concentrate, or having less interest in activities and life.
Life doesn’t have to feel this way, but you might need professional help from your GP and/or a mental health professional to get better.
